Invitation to the First TUMS meeting
Below is the 1992 invitation to the first TUMS meeting. Western's TUMS group has been meeting regularly since that time.
October 13, 1992Dear Colleague:
We would like to extend an invitation to you to join us at an informal meeting of people who provide microcomputer support to clients in their respective departments and faculties.
The primary purpose of this meeting is to get to know each other and find out what others are doing. We already know that most of you are providing excellent support to your clients and we at CCS are attempting to do the same. However, there is no avenue, either formal or informal, to learn more about your support and the resources you have. We would like to find out whether the resources that you have can benefit others on campus and have this information shared among colleagues.
For example, you may have a CD-ROM service or a particular piece of software that others might be interested to know about. The other day, a colleague approached us and enquired whether we had a Lahey Fortran compiler or knew of someone who had one. We could not give a definitive answer, nor is CCS in a position to have a copy of all software, given the tight budget situation. Perhaps there are instances where you have developed software locally to help your users which might benefit others in the community. Given the development of networks and LANS on campus, we feel that it is important to keep in touch with each other to share our knowledge and experience.
There has already been an attempt to collect ideas about the concept of knowledge sharing. Earlier this year, the Computer User's Committee ran notices in CCS's column "For campus computer users..." in the Western News, requesting interested persons to contact the committee with their suggestions. This approach was not successful. CCS hopes that bringing together a small group of people with similiar responsibilities will be more productive.
We want to assure you that this meeting is not about territories or sharing human resources but rather an effort to keep ourselves informed about each other.
If you agree with this concept, please e-mail your response to JUDY@UWOVAX.UWO.CA suggesting what day of the week and time of day would be convenient for such a meeting. Our idea initially is to have a meeting during which the CCS Microsupport Team members will each explain their role and activities and give other members at the meeting the chance to do the same. If you have any issues to be discussed at the meeting, please indiciate them in your note as well, so that we can establish an agenda before the meeting.
