AODA Best Practices

Although AODA doesn’t specifically list best practices but rather creates mandates specific accessibility standards, however, the following are some good ideas to keep in mind:
  • Avoid embedding third-party videos that are not captioned on your site.
  • Remember that screen readers cannot read colour cues. Incorporate text-based cues.
  • Avoid using non-text content when you can.
  • Consider the purpose of and the location on the page of non-text content when writing alt-texts.
  • Aim for good intuitive headings and subheadings.
  • To help those with low vision, avoid putting text on images and coloured backgrounds.
  • Limit your assumptions about your audience – you never know who will be accessing your site. Expect a wide diversity in users.
