Rack PC Software Request

Use of Supported Classroom Software

Instructors are encouraged to utilize software that is pre-installed and supported by the Classroom Technology Group (CTG)

Please note that CTG operates within limited resources and may not be able to accommodate all individual software requests. Consequently, not all applications can be integrated into classroom computer systems. In alignment with this policy, CTG is not responsible for funding or subsidizing any third-party applications, licenses, or associated fees required to meet specific instructional needs.

This page outlines how the Classroom Technology Group (CTG) administers requests to install custom applications on computers located in General University (G.U.) classrooms.

It is essential that all information provided here is carefully reviewed and understood prior to initiating a request. If you have questions about the process, please submit an inquiry to CTG through the Service Desk Form.

The requestor and/or end user(s) acknowledge that while the Classroom Technology Group (CTG) may install an application, CTG is not responsible for its ongoing maintenance, licensing, or management. This includes, but is not limited to, the storage or backup of end-user content and data.

CTG does not retain official records identifying the location or attributes of non-standard installations

CTG may, at its discretion and without prior notice, remove any computer exhibiting questionable performance. In such cases, the affected machine will be replaced to ensure continuity of CTG-supported services.

Replacement computers will not include non-standard applications, data, or customized configurations associated with the previous device.

It is the responsibility of the end user to manage and back up their data independently of the classroom computer.

For questions or support related to this policy, please submit an inquiry through the Service Desk Form.

CTG may be unable to fulfill certain installation requests or may remove previously installed applications under the following circumstances:

  • Incomplete or unsatisfactory information is not provided in a timely manner.
  • The application is incompatible with the supported operating system.
  • The application conflicts with system configuration or security requirements.
  • The application negatively impacts system performance or support processes.
  • The application requires persistent system-level access or special permissions.
  • The application cannot be installed or operated without extensive or proprietary modifications.
  • Installation cannot be completed within one hour during CTG's normal operating hours.
  • The application is resource-intensive or highly proprietary (e.g., AutoCAD®, SolidWorks®, Visual Studio®, LabVIEW®).
  • The application or its version is not officially supported by Western and may conflict with existing agreements, policies, or procedures.

CTG will not proceed with installation if the application has not been legally obtained or provided in full by the requestor. Furthermore, all requestors must acknowledge, accept, and affirm the terms and conditions outlined in this document for their request to be considered.

Individuals submitting a request to install an application must acknowledge and agree to the following terms and conditions:

  • The application is intended solely for legal, academic, and instructional use.
  • The application’s license is active and will remain valid for the duration of its use on the specified number of classroom computers.
  • The requestor will provide CTG with a legal, registered version of the installation file via known, working, virus-free media, or supply valid login credentials to a secure, accessible URL from which CTG can easily download the installation file.
  • CTG reserves the right to evaluate the application within its supported operating environment before proceeding with installation or offering further guidance.
  • Installation may require up to one contiguous hour of on-site access per computer during CTG’s regular operating hours.
  • CTG may request the end user’s presence during installation to conduct a field test, ensuring proper implementation and verifying compatibility and performance.
  • CTG does not permit system-level access or special privileges to any third party on computers it manages.
  • CTG does not provide ongoing maintenance or management for non-standard applications installed at the request of users.

For questions or to initiate a request, please use the Service Desk Form.

Instructors who require custom software to support their teaching in General University (G.U.) classrooms must follow the guidelines established by the Classroom Technology Group (CTG).

These guidelines outline important considerations regarding software compatibility, licensing, installation procedures, and maintenance responsibilities. To ensure proper evaluation and support, all requests must be submitted through the Rack PC Software Request form.

This form allows CTG to assess the application's suitability within the classroom computing environment and coordinate installation in accordance with institutional standards.
